The Art of Tasseography

To "read the tea leaves": to use tea leaf patterns as signs or symbols, that remain at the top, side or bottom of a cup, once drained of the tea to predict something that's going to happen in the future (to interpret messages found in their shape and configuration).

Tasseography (also known as tasseomancy, tassology, or tasseology) is a fortune-telling method that is not only associated with reading tea leaves but also with coffee grounds and wine sediments.

Do You Know?

The name 'Tasseography' is derived from the French word tasse (cup), which in turn is derived from the Arabic loan word into French tassa and the Greek suffix graph (writing) - the writing in the cup.

Contrary to belief tea leaf reading is not attributed to the gypsies, it was first attributed to the Chinese who have for centuries held a deep adoration for tea and its beneficial qualities.

At the very foundation of Tasseograpy is the expert's staunch belief that answers already lie within us, it's the practice of opening your mind, being intentional in seeking answers and allowing the tea leaves to reveal the answers.

The Ritual: Four key rules that should be followed:
  1.  A white or light-coloured cup (so the outlines and dots of the leaves can be clearly seen), preferably shallow, with sloping sides and a wide mouth should be used
  2. The cup should be held in the left hand and slowly swirled from left to right three times. The tea should be drunk leaving only a small amount of tea (as little as possible) and the same hand used to invert the cup onto the saucer- leave for approximately one minute.
  3. The cup is turned right side up with the position of the handle facing due south. The handle is the conduit connecting the physical and abstract realm and represents the person asking the question (the querent).
  4. Reading the leaves: Location, location, location matters the most. The position of the leaves is important to the strength of their meaning.
Near the handle: Represents events regarding the person's immediate
         surrounds.
Directly across from the handle: Symbolises external issues and influences.
Nearest the handle: Signifies happenings that have the most chance
         of being realised.
Top of the cup: Means good fortune.
Approaching towards the bottom: Indicates the readings become graver.
